'We live in a world confused about the place of justice and the individual. We want to see poverty eradicated, so long as doing so doesn't impinge on our own lives. We celebrate the abolishment of slavery in our country and call the job done while turning a blind eye to the booming sex-slave industry worldwide. We seek medicines to prolong and control the quality of life while ignoring the victims of forced amputations and mutilations in Africa and elsewhere. Within the bounds of America herself, we are now facing the repercussions of greedy financial choices, but as a result, gifts to charity are at an all time low. We go on mission trips overseas and avoid ever entering the ''bad spots'' of our own cities. Granted, these statements are clearly overgeneralizations, but it does raise the question of the role of the church in the world. What does it mean to pray, ''thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven''? The general impression is that Christians are no different from their neighbors in following cultural trends. We are not noticeably marked by our love for the helpless in our society, more often we are noticed for our political stands. Within the Church universal, there is a marked divide: those on the ''evangelical'' side battle for moral purity within the church, building up walls of protection against sin and wrongful cultural compromises, while those on the ''liberal'' side prioritize social justice as the mark of a Christian, and the church functions as an agency to get people involved but do not question an individual's moral choices. Again, these are strong stereotypes. But churches -- consciously or unconsciously -- generally end up having to choose between these two poles. James 1:27, however, answers this dilemma with the firm announcement that, to please God, one must both keep moral purity and participate in the work of social justice. While that verse says this principle most succinctly, it is not unique. Throughout all of Scripture, the Holy God makes clear that part of being holy is to act in accordance with his stated and consistent concern for the poor and oppressed. Without an active participation in bringing about God's kingdom by delivering the oppressed and helping the impoverished, God might well reject that person's worship and Jesus reject the association with them. This is not to say that our salvation is based on works, but rather that God demands a changed heart from the people whom he claims as his own. As Israel at Mount Ebal received the warnings for failure to follow God's law -- including both moral and sexual contaminants as well as one stating ''Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow'' (Deut 27:19), so we have received fair warning from Jesus himself in his final teaching before the crucifixion that the commands for social justice are not optional. Those who follow Jesus are called to be a holy people who live as God's hands of justice and mercy toward the oppressed of the world. Caring for the poor and distressed is not optional.'
